Most cemeteries require some type of outer container to enclose the casket and support the weight of the ground (many hundreds of pounds) above the grave. Some cemeteries allow only top-seal vaults. Vaults are made of some type of metal (steel, stainless steel or copper), concrete (painted or unpainted), or concrete with some type of synthetic liner to add protection and peace of mind. By definition, a burial vault is sealed; an outer container or graveliner does not seal.
