WHIT CHERRY Obituary

Mr. Whit Harding Cherry passed away peacefully, Monday, September 15, 2008 at Rich Square Health Care Center, Rich Square, NC.  He was 87, born on April 15, 1921 in Windsor, Bertie County, N.C. to the late Noah Cater and Laura Wilma Cherry.  He was educated in the North Carolina School System. The family moved to Woodland, NC and Whit migrated to Waterbury, Conn. where he married Eva LaMar Cherry who resides at The Pines in Poughkeepsie, NY.  He worked for the Rubber Plant in Connecticut for over 20 years before relocating to Poughkeepsie, NY and joined the staff at Hudson River State Hospital as a Cook.  Whit retired from HRSH in 1984 after 15 years of service and moved back to Woodland, NC with a long time friend. Whit joined Jerusalem Baptist Church in Woodland, NC at an early age and rededicated his life to Jesus at Jerusalem when he returned to Woodland.  He enjoyed people and loved playing pinochle with his brothers until his health started failing.  He loved to travel.  He always kept a bag packed in the trunk of his car.  He said you never know when you might have to make a quick trip.  He was ready for this trip to spend eternity with Jesus because he had accepted Jesus as his personal Savior. He leaves to cherish his memories in addition to his wife, Eva, his children, Timothy Cherry (wife Maluiqka), of Newburg, NY; Johnnie D. Lowe of Poughkeepsie, NY Edna Clark (husband Jerry) of Naugatuck, Conn.; Truniliar Pittman and Hoke Robert (wife Aldora) of Poughkeepsie, NY and Curtis Robert (wife Valerie) of North Potomac, Md.  Brothers, Alvin Cherry (wife Virginia) and Hollis Cherry (wife Rosa) of Rich Square, NC.; Sisters, Doris Cherry-Brown and Sarluta Anderson-Davis (husband Charles) of Poughkeepsie, NY.  Brother- in-law, William Ruffin, Sr. and Sister-in-law Yvonne Louise Cherry, twenty seven (27) grandchildren, twenty one (21) great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughters Laura Cherry and Novetta Bynum, Son Clyde “Rondu” Bynum, Sister Dorothy Lee Ruffin, Brothers Edward Rudolph, David Earl, Robert Fisher, Theodore Wilmer, Cater Salvadore cherry and a special friend, Verniliar Robert. Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Friday, September 19, 2008 in the Chapel of New Beginnings Funeral Service Inc. Services will be held Saturday, 2:00 PM, September 20, 2008 at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Woodland, NC with Rev. John Grant officiating.  Services under the direction of New Beginning Funeral Home, Rich Square, NC.
